Dr. Mukharjee has begun his medical education in Guntur Medical College, Guntur, where he has done his best cardiologist MBBS and later his MD in General Medicine. In both the courses, he was considered one of the best outgoing students. He was ranked second in the combined state of Andhra Pradesh in the entrance exam for the DM cardiology course. He pursued his cardiology education at the Gandhi Medical College, Hyderabad and received DM cardiology from NTR University of health sciences, while qualifying at the top of the class. With a passion to achieve further education credentials, he has appeared for the DNB examination after seven years of completing DM and cleared the exam in first attempt, a feat then considered quite remarkable. He is one of the very few cardiologists in India with both a D.M. degree and a DNB degree in cardiology.

After finishing his DM cardiology, Dr. Mukharjee worked initially as a honorary faculty at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences, later at Yashoda Hospitals and Prime Hospital and is working currently at Maxcure Hospitals (known previously as Sunshine hospital, Madhapur) as a senior interventional cardiologist and the director of the department of Cardiology. Dr. Mukharjee specializes in coronary angiography and angioplasty. He does most of his coronary procedures from the wrist access (radial artery access). He is regarded as one of the best interventional cardiologists in Hyderabad in his generation. He does complex interventional procedures with ease and a high rate of success. The very high number of procedures that he does stands testimony to his skill and experience. Till date, he has done more than 15,000 coronary angiograms, and more than 3600 angioplasty procedures. He offers the best second opinion regarding the angiograms done elsewhere, directing the patients to chose treatment wisely.

He is one among a select group of cardiologists who is recognized by the American Society of Hypertension as a ASH Hypertension Specialist. The society recognition requires clearing an exam, and Dr. M.S.S. Mukharjee is one among only five cardiologists in the entire country to have cleared the exam held in August 2014.

With a strong research and academic inclination, Dr. Mukharjee is participating in various clinical trials as an investigator. He has devised an easy way of teaching the medical students to learn ECG, and regularly conducts sessions for the students regarding the art and science of ECG-reading.

Cardiac Procedures

A Coronary angiogram is a special X-ray test used to find out where and how much blockage is present in your heart arteries. This procedure can help your cardiologist see if you need treatment such as angioplasty or stent, coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) or medical therapy.

Usually day care Angiography takes approximately 30 – 45 minutes for procedure and post hospitalisation stay for some time. If the procedure progresses to an angioplasty, then it can last 1-2 hours depending on the type of blockage.

Before undergoing coronary angiogram test, it’s better and mandatory to consult a cardiologist to get clear picture on your heart disease.

In some people, coronary arteries can become narrowed and blocked because fatty deposits on the artery walls, finally this leads to heart attack or sometimes sudden death.

Angioplasty is a procedure that helps to treat coronary heart disease and angina. It can help to relieve angina symptoms and is also used as an emergency treatment for people who’ve had a heart attack.

Coronary angioplasty helps to improve the blood supply to your heart muscle by widening narrowed coronary arteries and allowing blood to flow through again.

CABG is the surgical bypassing of blocked heart blood vessels. CABG improves blood flow to the heart and CABG Surgery is performed by a cardiothoracic surgeon. Surgeon is used to treat people who have severe coronary heart disease (CHD) or serious chest pain (angina) and CHD is a disease in which a waxy substance called plaque (plak) builds up inside the coronary arteries. These arteries supply oxygen-rich blood to your heart.

Over time, plaque can harden or rupture (break open). Hardened plaque narrows the coronary arteries and reduces the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the heart. This can cause serious chest pain (angina). If the plaque ruptures, a blood clot can form on its surface. A large blood clot can mostly or completely block blood flow through a coronary artery. This is the most common cause of a heart attack.

Mitral valve replacement is a cardiac surgical procedure in which a patient’s diseased mitral valve is replaced by either a mechanical or bioprosthetic valve. Mitral valve replacement is performed when the valve becomes too tight (mitral valve stenosis) for blood to flow into the left ventricle, or too loose (mitral valve regurgitation) in which case blood can leak back into the left atrium and thereby back into the lung. Mitral valve disease can occur from infection, calcification, inherited collagen disease, or other causes. Since a mitral valve replacement is an open heart surgical procedure, it requires placing the patient on cardiopulmonary bypass.

Aortic aneurysm is localized abnormal dilatation or widening of a blood vessel, at least 50% more than its normal size. The aorta is the largest blood vessel in the body, extending from the heart down through the thorax and abdomen until it divides to form the major arteries of the legs. Thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm (TAAA) refers to an abnormal widening of the aorta involving both its thoracic and abdominal segments. Although atherosclerosis and TAAA share common risk factors and frequently co-exist, these aneurysms are primarily the result of age related degeneration and weakening of the aortic wall. Connective tissue disorders, dissections (separation of the wall layers), infections, and inflammations are the other causes.

A pacemaker must be implanted under the skin. This procedure takes about 1 hour in most cases. You will be given a sedative to help you relax. You will be awake during the procedure.

A small incision (cut) is made, most often on the left side of the chest below your collarbone. The pacemaker generator is then placed under the skin at this location. The generator may also be placed in the abdomen, but this is less common.

Using live x-rays to see the area, the doctor puts the leads through the cut, into a vein, and then into the heart. The leads are connected to the generator. The skin is closed with stitches. Most people go home within 1 day of the procedure.
